Atlanta opener against Clemson is a Crimson Tide celebration

August 31, 2008

Last year’s opener was Nick Saban’s coronation. Saturday’s game against Clemson was the celebration. And it lasted all day for Alabama fans who made the trip to Atlanta. This wasn’t a college football game; this was an all-day party. More than 12,000 fans attended ESPN’s “GameDay” show, and 50,000 participated in the festivities at Centennial Olympic Park, according to Atlanta Sports Council president Gary Stokan. Most of them yelled “Roll Tide” a lot. Full Story (http://timesfreepress.com:80/news/2008/aug/31/atlanta-opener-against-clemson-crimson-tide-celebr/) Tags:

Hear That Pin Drop? Where Are All the Clemson Football Fans?

August 31, 2008

Normally I just write on my own blog and then will post some of the stuff over here on Bleacher Report; this is not the case, though I'll probably put a link from my blog to this article.

Why did you continue to defend an overpaid, overrated coach? I told you what he was, and you couldn't understand that a coach is only as good as his record; you wouldn't listen.

I can understand when a team is outmanned, outgunned, and just in over its head; Clemson doesn't have that excuse, and neither does Tommy Bowden. What we all saw last night was a team that was unprepared and looked soft.

Clemson didn't even play an upper-echelon SEC team, 'Bama is on the rebound, but they are just considered on their way up in relation to their conference. Clemson fans paraded themselves around here and around the Internet like the ACC title and (OK, now I am laughing for real) undefeated season was their right and to be expected. What do you say now?

You took it personally when I stated facts; you talked about me among yourselves on Tigernet, even stooped so low to call me names. Now I have a name for the Clemson program and its backers today—it's five letters and the first is "L" (and yes, that's a capital "L").

We read article after article written by Clemson fans talking about how great their team is based on the fact they had a top 10 preseason ranking; what a pathetic joke. They mocked me for saying that maybe they should think about proving something on the field first; they even took it further.

So where are the Clemson fans today? Hiding under that rock they talk about? That's where I would be if I supported a team and coach that embarrassed me on national TV like they did last night.

DOMINATION! Bama 34 - Clemson 10

August 31, 2008

Associated Press - ATLANTA, Ga. – Nick Saban may face his toughest task yet: Holding down runaway expectations for his inexperienced Alabama team.

Crimson Tide’s $4 million-per-year coach gave Alabama backers a reason to think big Saturday night, leading ‘Bama to a thorough 34-10 beating of No. 9 Clemson 34-10 at the Georgia Dome.

“Nobody can be satisfied with a one-game performance,” Saban said. “This will be a challenge for our team and it’ll be interesting to see how they respond.”

Still, as the Alabama band broke into Queen’s “We Are The Champions,” at the end, you had to wonder if they were honoring the Crimson Tide’s past, with 12 national titles and years of dominance in the Southeastern Conference under Bear Bryant, or gazing into the near future.

“It’s still early. We still got a long way to go,” cautioned quarterback John Parker Wilson, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third. “But we’ve got a good group of guys here who can do it.”

Especially if the Tide play like this.

Sweet Dome, Alabama—Tide Rolls Past Clemson

August 30, 2008

Uh-oh. Could it be? Is Alabama back?
No. 24 Alabama looked impressive in their 2008 season opener against No. 9 Clemson winning convincingly 34-10 and giving Nick Saban his biggest victory yet as head coach of the Crimson Tide.

Alabama’s defense, which was considered by many to be a weakness, held Clemson’s rushing attack to 0 yards, 188 total offensive yards, and limited the Tigers offense to only a field goal.

The Tigers' heralded "Thunder and Lightning" backfield of James Davis and C.J. Spiller were limited to 20 yards combined.

Clemson’s only other score came on a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by C.J. Spiller to begin the third quarter.
Right from the start, Alabama showed they matched up well with the ACC favorites. The offense moved the ball effectively through the air as John Parker Wilson finished 22-for-30 for 180 yards and two touchdowns. With Wilson’s performance in this game he passed Brodie Croyle for the Alabama all-time completions record with 500.

But is was the Alabama ground game that was especially impressive moving the ball easily on last season’s ninth ranked defense. Freshman Mark Ingram rushed for 97 yards on 17 carries and junior Glen Coffee had 90 yards on 17 carries.

Overall, Alabama out-rushed Clemson 237-to-0, the fewest yards rushing by Clemson since rushing for -1 yards against Boston College in 1947 and controlled the ball for 41:13.

Highly touted freshman Julio Jones caught a touchdown pass in his first collegiate game, and Nick Walker hauled in a career-high seven passes for 67 yards and a score.

"We got whipped about every way you can get whipped," Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden said. "We haven't been beaten like that in three years."

The question now becomes can Alabama keep up this level of play into the tough SEC season.

"I like our players to have confidence. I didn't see anybody scared out there. I didn't see any fear," Alabama head coach Nick Saban said. "We're capable of doing more and better. We have to get players to be better, nobody can be satisfied with a one-game performance."

As Alabama was busy winning its 12th straight game against Clemson, the Bama faithful were busy letting the thoughts and expectations run wild. This was the Bama team they wanted to see and the team and its high paid coach delivered.

As the game came to a close the Alabama band broke into Queen’s “We Are The Champions.” They may have been playing it in honor of Bear Bryant’s 12 National titles or it could have been wishful thinking for the future of the program.

Either way, if the Tide keeps playing like this, they will be…sooner rather than later.

Alabama vs. Clemson - The Wrapup

August 30, 2008

Total domination, but not by the team we expected.

Alabama was impressive in every aspect of the game, on both sides of the ball. The Tide completely shut down Clemson, both from a coaching standpoint, and on the field. A few quick observations:

• Jim McElwain has made a world of difference for John Parker Wilson. The QB was poised, in control and made good decisions the entire game.

• We have a running game, and used it very effectively. Running behind a veteran line, this group made it look easy.

• Our defense looked very strong. They played with fire and determination. Terrence Cody is a beast, and will be fun to watch.

• Julio looked good. He made a couple of rookie errors, but to be fair, the hype was so insane, there's no way he could have lived up to it. He'll be better each week.

• As a whole, the team has bought into the Process, and played as a cohesive unit. Coach Saban has remade this team in his image. Roll Tide, everyone.
