Varsity Sports Media’s Alabama Football magazine, in conjunction with sister magazines Florida Football, Tennessee Football and Georgia Football, have voted the Georgia Bulldogs the No. 1 team in America heading into the 2008 season. The annual poll, which is voted on by editors and writers for all four magazines, lists six SEC teams – Georgia, Florida (No. 5), defending national champion LSU (No. 9), Auburn (No. 13), Tennessee (No. 15) and Alabama (No. 25) – among the Top 25.
The Bulldogs split the first-place votes with Southern Cal, but manage to average out higher than the Trojans. Matt Stafford returns to Athens for his third year behind center, and running back Knowshon Moreno has the potential to be an All-American. An aggressive defense separates the Dogs from the pack.
It’s a new day in the Tommy Tuberville era at No. 15 Auburn. Gone is the run-oriented offense that Tiger fans have grown to loathe, and in comes a new, fancy no-huddle spread attack. But as long as the defense is up to par, the Tigers will be tough.
The 25th-ranked Crimson Tide has a new offensive coordinator, Jim McElwain, to work with an experienced starter at quarterback (John Parker Wilson) and host of young playmakers. Meanwhile, the defense should be better in Nick Saban’s second year.
The poll, along with complete preseason breakdowns of 13 Alabama college programs and all 428 high school teams in the state, can be found in Alabama Football magazine at newsstands statewide, and is available to purchase online at www.alabamaphenoms.com.
